Gwen R. Acker Wood, Ph.D., Esq., founder and president of Acker Wood IP Law, is a patent, trademark, and copyright attorney with over twenty years' experience providing intellectual property legal services to her clients. Gwen has wide-ranging expertise in obtaining patents and registering trademarks and copyrights. Specifically, Gwen's expertise includes patent preparation, prosecution and enforcement in the areas of biomechanical and medical devices, mechanical devices, biotechnology, life science, nutritional science, and environmental science; trademark searching and copyright registration and enforcement; client counseling; preparation of legal opinions related to patentability, validity, and patent infringement; contract preparation and review, such as assignment, license, confidentiality (NDA) and business agreements; and helping start-up companies form their LLC, S-corp., or register their fictitious name.

 

Prior to opening Acker Wood IP Law, Gwen worked as a research scientist, awarded two postdoctoral scholarships in neural science and psychoneuroimmunology.  Gwen also was an adjunct professor at the following institutions in the following disciplines: advanced pathophysiology, nutritional science and environmental science at New York University, and advanced pathophysiology at Duquesne University.

 

Gwen holds an M.S. in hematology and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from New York University, and a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University School of Law.
 

Awards & Honors:  NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship, 1984-1986;  NIMH Postdoctoral Fellowship, 1992-1994.

Admitted to Practice:  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and State of Ohio bars, the Western District of Pennsylvania, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Anthony H. Handal, Esq.  Of Counsen to Acker Wood IP Law

Anthony H. Handal, Esq. is of counsel to the firm's patent, trademark and copyright litigation practice and a member of Handal & Morofsky, LLC.  With over 35 years of practice, Tony counts among the most experienced attorneys in the United States and is among the most respected litigators in the United States.  Tony focuses his practice on patent, trademark and copyright trial and appellate work as well as on internet and commercial matters.  

 

Over the past 35 years, Tony has served as lead counsel in over 300 intellectual property lawsuits, or over 0.5 percent of all patent litigation in the U.S. federal courts, with amounts at risk ranging up to $2 billion, representing such clients as ADM, JVC, Conair Corporation, Dayco, Estee Lauder, Clear Channel, Neiman Marcus and Target.  These actions have been before the U.S. Supreme Court, many Federal appellate and district courts, and overseas tribunals, and include jury and bench trials. In his career, he has also obtained over 700 patents for his clients.  He has experience representing clients from various technologies and industries, including pharmaceuticals, electronics, business methods, medical devices, software, molecular biology, biomedical systems, holography, apparel and retail.  Tony has taught patent litigation strategy at the Patent Resources Group.  He has also presented in-house training programs at many corporations, including Xerox, Pitney Bowes, J.P. Morgan Chase and General Electric.

 

A former engineer who conceived the first digital data compression system while a University researcher under Project Apollo, Tony also has worked for many years in licensing, and related corporate matters, as well as in the enforcement and procurement of intellectual property rights in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

 

Tony holds an engineering degree from Polytechnic University (1969) and a Juris Doctorate from the Georgetown University Law Center (1972).

 

Admitted to Practice:  States of New York and Connecticut; the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
